Measles Vaccination Campaign Launching on November 1

Ministry of Health will launch a national measles vaccination campaign on November 1st, 2015, to run until November 26. The campaign targets 1.5 million children, aged 1 to 18, and includes nationals and residents alike.



“Several cases of measles among workers have been reported over the past three months in various parts of the country and they have been successfully treated,” said Dr Hussein Abdel Rahman Al Rand, assistant under-secretary for clinics and health centres at the Ministry of Health.

The national immunisation campaign will be carried out by the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with health authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as the private health sector. Vaccines will be available at many primary health care centres and some preventive medicine centres.

Measles is a highly contagious, serious disease caused by a virus.Measles is caused by a virus in the paramyxovirus family and it is normally passed through direct contact and through the air. The virus infects the mucous membranes, then spreads throughout the body. Measles is a human disease and is not known to occur in animals.Accelerated immunization activities have had a major impact on reducing measles.
